| When petroleum fuel refined from crude oil extracted from deep underground is burned on the surface of the earth, it burns incompletely. Due to incomplete combustion, unburned gas from factories, automobiles, ships, airplanes, etc. is discharged into the atmosphere.
When unburned gas in the atmosphere is exposed to ultraviolet rays contained in sunlight, it causes a photochemical reaction and the unburned gas majorly turns to photochemical smog. Crude oil exists in the ground without oxygen and where light do not reach, on the surface of the earth it is in a completely different environment.
